Former President Obama Says Cancel Culture Can Be Dangerous

Former President Barack Obama is warning of the dangers surrounding cancel culture in today’s society. In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper that aired on Monday, Obama explained that cancel culture could go “overboard.”

“A lot of the dangers of cancel culture and ‘we’re just going to be condemning people all the time,’ at least among my daughters, they’ll acknowledge that among their peer group or in college campuses, you’ll see people going overboard.”

The 59-year-old explained that while he and his family realize that people are not going to be “politically correct all the time,” they are still going to “call out institutions or individuals if they are being cruel” or discriminating against others to raise awareness.

In the past, the 44th president has criticized what he referred to as “woke” culture, which he feels leaves little opportunity for forgiveness for those in the spotlight. At a 2019 event for his foundation Summit in Chicago, Obama stated that people should discard the idea that everyone will “politically woke” at all times.
