A 7-year-old Chicago girl was shot and killed Wednesday after getting her hair styled for an upcoming trip to Disney World, police said.
Heaven Sutton, a second grader on summer break, had begged her mother to move out of their West Side neighborhood after a series of recent shootings, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
"She had been telling me, ‘Mom, let's move, let's get out,'" Ashake Banks, 38, told the newspaper.
As an escape, the pair had plans to visit Disney World in Orlando, Fla., next month.
Instead, Heaven was gunned down just steps from her home Wednesday night.
Banks was finishing up selling candy under a tent in her front yard around 10:40 p.m. when the shooting started.
Cops said two men fired into a crowd of people.
Heaven, who had just returned from a hair salon and was playing with some kids nearby, was running away when she was hit, Sutton said.
She was pronounced dead about a half hour later at Loyola University Medical Center.
A 19-year-old man who was shot in the ankle survived.
Banks said she suspected the shooters were gang members aiming for someone in the crowd.
Now, her little girl, who she described as a fashion “diva,” was dead, she told the Sun-Times.
"She'd been looking forward to [our vacation], and they took my baby's life," she said.
The grieving mom offered a $3,000 reward to find her daughter’s killer.
Cops were investigating the shooting on Thursday.
