A Major Case of The Pot + The Kettle: PETA KILLS Animals!

  • Rating: No Rating
Statistics show that PETA looks to be  fighting a lost cause:
Today the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) published documents online showing that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) killed 95 percent of the adoptable pets in its care during 2008. Despite years of public outrage over its euthanasia program, the animal rights group kills an average of 5.8 pets every day at its Norfolk, VA headquarters. According to public records from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, PETA killed 2,124 pets last year and placed only seven in adoptive homes. Since 1998, a total of 21,339 dogs and cats have died at the hands of PETA workers. Despite having a $32 million budget, PETA does not operate an adoption shelter.

PETA employees make no discernible effort to find homes for the thousands of pets they kill every year. Last year, the Center for Consumer Freedom petitioned Virginia's State Veterinarian to reclassify PETA as a slaughterhouse. CCF Research Director David Martosko said: "PETA hasn't slowed down its hypocritical killing machine one bit, but it keeps browbeating the rest of society with a phony 'animal rights' message. What about the rights of the thousands of dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens that die in PETA's headquarters building?"

Martosko added: "Since killing pets is A-OK with PETA, why should anyone listen to their demands about eating meat, using lab rats for medical research, or taking children to the circus?" CCF obtained PETA's "Animal Record" filings since 1998 from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Members of the public can see these documents at PetaKillsAnimals.com.

So, when PETA is pushing for this or that person to be hanged because of their cruelty to animals, we need to realize, they are doing it to keep a cake job and not exclusively for the purpose of the animals humane treatment. For PETA to have a $32 million dollar budget and not locate new homes for animals gives us the hunch that something screwy is going on... plain and simple.

The Center for Consumer Freedom is a nonprofit corporation run by lobbyist Richard Berman through his Washington, D.C.-based for-profit public relations company, Berman & Co. The Center for Consumer Freedom, formerly known as the Guest Choice Network, was set up by Berman with a $600,000 “donation” from tobacco company Philip Morris.
Berman arranges for large sums of corporate money to find its way into nonprofit societies of which he is the executive director. He then hires his own company as a consultant to these nonprofit groups. Of the millions of dollars “donated” by Philip Morris between the years 1995 and 1998, 49 percent to 79 percent went directly to Berman or Berman & Co.
Richard Berman is an influence peddler. He has worked out a scheme to funnel charitable donations from wealthy corporations into his own pocket. In exchange, he provides a flurry of disinformation, flawed studies, op-ed pieces, letters to the editor, and trade-industry articles, as well as access to his high-level government contacts, who are servants of the industries he represents.

Berman’s name might sound familiar. In 1995, Berman and Norm Brinker, his former boss at Steak and Ale Restaurants, were identified as the special-interest lobbyists who donated the $25,000 that disgraced then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who was hauled before the House Ethics Committee for influence-peddling over the money. Berman and Brinker were lobbying against raising the minimum wage.

Richard Berman is a spin doctor. For example, he has argued against a Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) initiative to lower the blood alcohol content (BAC) limit for drivers by claiming that the stricter limits would punish responsible social drinkers. He has claimed that U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warnings about salmonella-related food poisoning are just “whipping up fear over food.”

Here’s how an internal Philip Morris memo described Berman’s spin: “His proposed solution would broaden the focus of the ‘smoking issue,’ and expand into the bigger picture of over-regulation.” Smoking won’t kill you; over-regulation will.

Berman is “a one-man wrecking crew on important issues.” His approach has been described as “misleading” and “despicable.” Berman has been called “a tobacco company whore,” but he’s branched out since then.

Using “freedom of choice” as his battle cry, Berman has now taken on PETA and a number of other groups and organizations whose points of view could have an impact on the profits of his clients by waking consumers up. Berman’s Guest Choice Network has an “advisory panel” whose members in 1998 included officials representing companies ranging from Cargill Processed Meat Products and Outback Steakhouse to Minnesota Licensed Beverage Association and Sutter Home Winery. Berman’s clients are companies with vested interests in low employee wages; cheap, unhealthy restaurant-chain food, particularly meat; and tobacco, soft drink, and alcohol consumption—companies like Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Armour Swift, and Philip Morris, whose product line includes Kraft Foods and everything from Marlboro cigarettes to Oscar Meyer wieners and which is a major shareholder in its former subsidiary Miller Brewing, now known as SABMiller.
PETA’s recent successes in gaining fast-food industry concessions for more humane conditions for farm animals have sent ripples of fear through the food and beverage service industry. About the same time that McDonald’s buckled to PETA’s demands, Richard Berman changed his front group’s name and stepped up his attacks. The key to Berman’s aggressive strategy is, in his own words, “to shoot the messenger ... we’ve got to attack their credibility as spokespersons,”—an interesting remark from someone whose background and funding so severely challenge his own credibility.

One of the big problems with PETA and their pet placment programs is that they make adopting an animal expensive and difficult. I was trying to adopt a cat through one of their approved cat rescue programs in North Texas, and I was supposed to complete an 8 page application. They wanted too much of my personal information. I can understand you want to know if I can afford to take care of the pet, some city shelters do want proof of income and pet deposit. These idiots wanted four references from my job, five personal references, a tour of my home, and to see if my car was safe to transport an animal in. I immediately threw that app in the trash. I was to pay an application fee, a donation to the program, and I had to pay to turn thr animal back in if I'd changed my mind. I'd have to pay a $300 rehoming fee if I did.

Ashley I am really sad and angry to hear this. PETA does alot of good too. I believe Vick deserves his chance and I know he is working with another animal org. But please know this lobbying group that's putting this information out is horrible. Lobbying groups are dreadful. This one is funded by dirty scums. They are striking while the iron is hot. There will always be hunting , farm factories and animal abusers ..animal rapists..etc..

Madison, I hear what you're saying but this organization's claim to fame is protecting animals and they're rights as living creatures. For them to attackMike Vick the way they did and criticize the Eagles for giving this man a second chance and then turn around and have all the bones fly out of their closet like THIS -- SMDH!

Madison, I believe there are many donors and people affiliated with PETA that do great things. They also support efforts to teach children animal safety and responsible pet ownwership. The higher up/more famous someone is within PETA, the more outlandish they can be. The pet app wouldn't have been such a big deal had the lady in charge not called and left me some looney messages about how iif I adopt from a local shelter I might as well kill one of their cats. Unfortunately, that lady is from a wealthy family and her cat rescue is her crusade to "save" the world. She's also really good friends with PETA's founder (Ingrid?)...

WTH?!!! They're free at the humane society. This is just a group for people who have too much time on their hands. 8 page application, you're not buying a house or trying to get a mortgage!!!! All smoke and mirrors for special interest groups.
