Permalink Reply by CCD is Workin on a baller 4 she on May 9, 2012 at 10:17am We did have shows with characters like that. Remember the UPN network?
The Twilight Zone - Host Forrest Whitaker
The Game
One On One
Half N Half - Dad's wife and ex-wife were black. Everyone dated black men and women.
Moesha - Whole damn cast was black
The Parkers - Nikki ran after the black college professor the whole dang show
Eve - They had a token white chick
Love, Inc
Cuts
The Hughleys
Between Brothers - all black male cast
So we had a network that showcased blacks in strong roles and evidently enough of us didn't watch it. My question is: why with all the money the black athletes and entertainers have, why didn't they form a conglomerate and save that network? They could have made it the first all black network.

"Lincoln Heights" use to come on ABC Family, I loved that show
There aren't very many family orientated shows on tv at all, not like it was in the 90s where we had TGIF and they showed all the "family shows". Now everything is a cop drama, reality show, or sci-fi based series.

Permalink Reply by Sheli on May 9, 2012 at 12:53pm Ok so what? On those non-black shows one spouse is always cheating on the other or the other spouse has a drinking problem and isn't happy, do we really want to see a black couple where one of the spouses is cheating or secretly battling an adiction???? Just for the sake of having "us" represented?? I'll pass on that.

Permalink Reply by Sheli on May 9, 2012 at 12:59pm My only gripe with "us" on television is this: We know how some of white america sees us, so they are going to write our roles to fit their stereotypes and its not necessarily out of hatred just out of lack of knowledge, now when "we" make our tv shows they should at least try to combat some of these stereotypes, instead of going along with them (ahem, The Game). I'm not saying be ashamed of who we are, BUT show the other side and still be funny and the majority of the AA shows named above showed our other side and the did very well.

Permalink Reply by Zaria 22 on May 10, 2012 at 12:48am What I've noticed, on the networks that I watch (b/c it depends on the channels you're watching), it's usually a black man with a "racially ambiguous" woman. She usually looks like she is hispanic or she's straight up white. Usually I'll see a black woman with a black man, and sometimes with a white man. I've also noticed that when there is a black character on a mainly all white show, it's a black man. And another recent trend I've noticed is making that token black male character gay. I see more positive images of black women and black families in TV commericals. They tend to represent black women with natural hair and family oriented with wholesome black husband and kids. It seems to me that black men get more supporting and leading roles on TV shows than black woman. Black women tend to be extras. But I do notice that there are more black woman in movies. I don't think it's fair, but it's all about marketing trends, and it will likely change. They are trying to get Black men to buy more products, images, or concepts.
