Hey everybody :)... So I was having a discussion earlier today with a coworker of mine that has shoulder length hair that's always straight. She kept going on and on about how she couldn't imagine having "nappy" hair etc.. Now living in Texas, I've come across quite a few stylists that have the same "nappy/natural hair is inferior to relaxed hair" mentality so ladies, are you natural or relaxed? What made you decide? If you're relaxed/natural, what are the pros and cons?

People better smarten up about this whole hair issue. Hair is the least of our probs, now the cherokee indians done kicked a whole bunch of AA out of the tribe. LOL

I'm natural going on 4 yrs. I like the feel, texture of it. I havn't felt my natural hair since I was a little girl since my mother pressed it (tssssss) and I relaxed it. I like the option to blow dry it straight or go back to the 'hair I was born with'     Now I can't stand the relaxer smell, my hair breaking, dry or burnt scalp. etc.

Im transitioning right now.  I dont have the guts to cut all my relaxed off right now, so mine is eventually going to be trimed off.  Ive been geting my hair straightened so I havent wore it just straight natural.  Once my hair grows out, I plan on stop getting it straight.  I was almost forced to stop getting relaxers for a while, and when I did, I started loving how thick, soft, and wavy my natural hair was, so I decided to try this natural thing out.  When I removed a sew-in I just had, I regretted my decision because my hair tangled so bad, but it worked out..till next time.

My mom and sister are just like ur co-workers.  they tell me, ooh, that hair nappy, and so-forth and so forth and I have to let them know.  My hair usually isnt even dry when they say that, they just see its thick and not straight and I just say "that cuz yall dont know about embracing your naturalism" or s.thing like that.  but who cares what they think - I could tell them, thats why yall aint got no hair cuz all that glue but *shrugs*

Lol I read that story about the Cherokee and honestly, I agree with them lol if you dont actually have Cherokee ancestors, why the hell should you be considered a part of their tribe? But about the hair thing, I'm natural and I have about 2-3 different textures in my hair so it's often daunting for any untrained/impatient stylist to handle so I often get the sideeye like "you sure you don't want a relaxer??"

find someone that specializes in natural hair..the ones who dont are the ones that usually insist on u getting a relaxer cuz they dont know how to deal with your hair.

I am natural but I can't even wear it out right now. I had a straight sew in installed for 3 weeks and have serious heat damage in the front, but I am have been natural for 2.5 years

I (being the perfectionist that I am) decided it was okay to straighten the parts left out everyday (it was a partial sew-in), so after I took it out and washed my hair the parts wouldn't curl anymore.

I'm natural, and I live in North Texas. I still get a lot of negative reactions from our people, but I love my hair. I currently have micros with curly hair because they're convenient and allowing my hair to rest.

I decided to go natural because I just up and decided I wanted my hair to rest. I used to change my hairstyles pretty frequently, and I was also in an emotionally abusive relationship with a man I used to get over another man who lied to me. The ex didn't like short or nappy hair, so I cut my relaxer-damaged hair off. It's almost been a year, and I love how my hair feels curly.

The biggest pro for me is versatility. I can get braids, get a sew-in, and just make sure I continue to take care of my hair. I've had my hair pressed twice this year and loved how full and bouncy it was, then I enjoyed just washing the straight away. :) I can take down whatever style I'm in and turn heads with my giant fro. My hair has also grown faster because I've been good to it.

Just being natural won't grow your hair out, the biggest con I've discovered is that I can damage my hair in it's natural state more than I could with a relaxer. It tangles and breaks easily if I'm lazy with the maintenance for just one day. Also, the fro can get monotonous when you're growing it out. And natural hair stylists are often con artists, they charge too much money for what I can do at home with a few hours of watching You Tube and some prayer. I trust myself with my hair more than anyone else, so it's hard to find a good stylist. And the products made for natural hair can be a waste of money, just get some good white hair products (Aussie products are GREAT), some oil from the health food store, then some of your old favorites from your relaxed days and you'll be fine.

I am natural. I was tired of having to keep up with relaxers and I wore weave all the time anyways so I figured why keep wearing a relaxer it was kind of pointless.

The pros:

Not keeping up with a chemical

            Less breakage

            Hair stronger/healthier

            Grows longer/thicker

            Versatility to wear straight/nappy/curly/mixture

The cons:

Finding products to maintain my hair

Really tangly if I wear weave for extended period of times

Keep hair braided at night if sleepy or will get matted

Having to moisten hair to comb it out

            Training hair

Probably from excessive flat iron use.

This is a pro for me, I love just running my hair under the shower every day. I don't wash it very day I just wet and moisturize it.

I decided to go natural bout a year ago because was tired of keepin up wit the relaxer in addition to my sensitive scalp. I was goin longer and longer in between relaxer because of my scalp so I jus chopped it off. I'm feel liberated some how now.

pros: no relaxer every 4-6 weeks

no wrappin my hair at night

no salon trips 2-3 per week

cons: moisten the hair prior to combing

more effort in the combing out rather regular or hot combing
