Which do you prefer, and why?

Personally, I am black... I have not been to Africa, and am not sure that I ever want to go. I have a Nigerian name, and its usually a conversation piece when i meet Africans... African men usually see it as a means to flirt, but African women are nasty!!!! A couple of times this summer, African women visiting the resort have nastily asked me ehy i have a Nigerian name when I'm obviously not from Nigeria...

Personally I feel that the hyphenated American status should be reserved for people that weren't born here...

The reason I ask is because our director (who is from Tunisia) asked the question black or white when trying to pair guests with a concierge, and a black chick got really nasty and replied African American... He was a bit taken aback and asked me what was the big deal...

To me, he is more African American than I ever could be...

LOL, I don't know why this is funny to me. Maybe you should research it, then you will know who you are. I have an African friend that can look at ur features and tell where your people came from eg. Somalia, Ethiopia, West and South Africa. Anyway, I feel so ROYAL, that I just KNOW an ancestor was a bbbbbbaaaaaaaaaddddddd Queen. Knowing/feeling this makes others perception of me irrevelant.

I am Black. I don't like the term AA. I have never been to Africa and most of the African women that I have met are rude and nasty to me. This is my opinion and I am sticking to it, LOL.

Black is a color, not a race of people.  Everyone else is identified by the country they're from. Why are we identified by the color black regardless of which country we're from??

White people are called white too tho, you rarely hear white people refer to themselves or other white people as Caucasian, Swiss-American, German-American, etc, we/they say white people. Asians are the only ethnicity who have a discernible look and we still group them all as "Asians" b/c we can't tell a Japense, from a Chinese, from a Korean and there isn't a color to describe them, Lol.   When I see a person with white skin I assume they are white and unless they have an accent I don't care to figure out what their ethnic make-up is.

I always hear 'white' people say the country they're from in conversation. Even 6 generations here say I'm Italian, Croation, Greek etc. They never say white.

Ever notice when they're looking for a suspect, they only describe the height & hair color of the wht person but say black for AA? lol

Spicey, I keep forgetting you're in a diff country. In these southern parts we say black, white, Mexican, or Asian. I know the Latinas/Latinos get mad b/c we call them Mexican all the time and the Dominicans hate it b/c we call them black too. Yeah unless you have an accent, on first glance, I'll call you white if you look white, (is that slightly ignorant? --Oh well LOL)

lol, good point, depends where you're from and where you live. See, all this fussing and no one gets it right. There's only one race and that's the human race. #stayfocusedonthemoney hahaha

Well spice many of us don't know our true roots so we use terms like black or African American.  it is really just a general term for having  Sub-Saharan Africa roots.

I usually check "other" on forms because I'm being sarcastic *shrug* I just don't identify with being African American because I know my family history and my ancestry (my family made it a point to make sure all children knew their heritage) and I don't remember seeing an ancestor in there that was straight from Africa.. Besides that, Im of mixed race/heritage so what would i look like denouncing half of my family for the sake of making Black strangers happy and White strangers feel less racially uncomfortable around me? Out of the two, if I feel absolutely obligated to explain to someone what I am, I refer to myself as Black

I have no preference because I think they are both one in the same; it's more for the people who really don't know where his or her ancestors are from, as in what country in Africa?  Now, as someone who is from a country in Africa, (s)he wouldn't identify themselves as "African-American". Instead, s(he) will represent the country (s)he are from, family is from, etc. For example, a young man from Nigeria would say "I'm Nigerian" versus "I'm African-American" or "I'm black". If anything, (s)he may say which tribe (s)he is from within the home country, too: "I am Igbo".
