Chris Brown Says He's 'Confused' About His Public Perception

  • Rating: No Rating
'I got the people that will come out and support and then the people that don't wanna see me do anything,' he says during 'Chris Brown: The Interview,' airing Friday at 6 p.m

RICHMOND, Virginia — Chris Brown pleaded guilty to assault back in June after a physical confrontation with then-girlfriend Rihanna. He was formally sentenced in August to one year of weekly therapy sessions, five years' probation and 180 days of community-labor service.

But when it comes to the court of public opinion, Brown is discovering that the ruling hasn't been nearly as swift and tidy

"I'm confused right now as far as the public perception [of me]," he revealed during the upcoming MTV News special "Chris Brown: The Interview," which airs Friday, November 6, at 6 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. "Like, I think with my fans, they still love me, they support me, definitely. You have those people who will support you. So it's kinda like 50/50 for me. I got the people that will come out and support and then the people that don't wanna see me do anything. They basically want me in jail."

Many critics felt Brown got off the hook too easily for the altercation, which left Rihanna battered and bruised. But his sentence might, in fact, be just as difficult as jail time, according to legal expert Peter Haven.

"Labor service is not a walk in the park," Haven explained to MTV News shortly after the sentencing. "It may be better than spending 180 days in jail, but it's not a walk in the park. ... Remember, if he violates [anything], it'll be a violation against his whole plea agreement."

Brown has recently begun taking the first steps to resurrecting his career. He returned to the stage last week for the first time since the incident and electrified those in attendance at the New York radio festival Powerhouse '09. The singer was energetic and also very eager to show his remorse during his set, telling fans he promised to be a better man.

Next, Brown will set out on a Fan Appreciation Tour later this month, where he'll perform at smaller venues beginning in Houston and finishing up December 15 in New York.

Is he trying to tell us something? Like read between the lines?

I think he deserves to get his life back. It boggles me that people STILL supported R.Kelly even after they saw the tape. Chris in a sense manned up for what he did, if it wasnt Rihanna would we care?

I sooooo agree with you... & Rihanna still hasn't accepted any responsibility for her actions...

Ugh shut up Chris! woman beater

Oh stop it, the man apologized for what he did and regrets it. People are so crude and foul now-a-days the world acts as if they haven't done anything wrong in their entire lives. This was a situation that got out of hand between two young people, instead of bashing them we should be ensuring they don't make the same mistake again *smh*

Because people are extremely biased and fickle on who they choose to support and not support, all boils down to is whom people like on a personal level. If the woman was a random female off the streets no one would've given a damn, but let's face it it's Rihanna people LOVE her, add that on to her being the female in the situation it's like a sure gurantee Chris is going to recieve the shorter end of the stick. It baffles me because situations like these go on consistently and continuously on a daily basis ten times as worse regarding the average Joes and Janes of America and it took two famous people for folks to be in such an uproar over something like this. Rappers talk about degrading and abusing women all of the time where is their backlash?

Well, I don't think the incident defines him as a person, maybe woman beater was a little harsh (even though that's exactly what he did). But I still think it takes a certain type of person to be capable of such things, and not a very good person at that.
Also, apologizing doesn't make it go away in my books. All is not well for me. If he can prove he has his shit together, then his actions have spoken louder than his words. I also don't think this is in the same category as common "mistakes" people make. Not everyone has hit someone, not to mention a woman, when a sitation has gotten out of hand.

hmph, its a lesson to be learned--if its not a good time to come out--don't waste the loot--PLEASE do something else for a minute..WRITE and beef up your catalog--so you can be sitting pretty for the rest of your life.

write and go to college--and come back as a heart throb in a couple of years or so..or try action movies, BEEF up! and then come back..

it seems like his camp has not saved any money or something..you can't push people AND money is tight for most now.

If he actually takes some time--he may discover a whole new love that makes him money while laying low from the fiasco..he needs to cut down his entourage--that shit is expensive..

I'd get my acting chops in order and write some songs for stars..JMO

Alright, lets say she did. Even if she did hit him, I don't think that gives HIM a free pass to hit her back to the degree that he did. He didn't just hit, he beat the shit out of her face. I know that some people feel she played a part in this whole thing, which is true, obviously. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to know that there are two people to every argument. But I don't think that anyone deserves or has any culpability in being a victim. That's like when a defense lawyer tries to defend his client by saying the victim somehow brought it on herself, such as wearing provocative clothing when she was raped. There is no defense to assault, unless the person did infact hit you first and you were defending yourself. In that case, this would have been a domestic dispute and no charges would be brought upon Chris. Or else, charges would have been brought upon both of them. By the look of the picture, Chris did A LOT more than defend himself. My sister was charged for assault back on New years, for scratching her bf. Trust, if Rihanna harmed Chris badly, or if she did it first, there would most likely be no case. Girls get charged for assault all the time. Although this case was heavily fueled in the media, I believe the police and judge probably looked at all evidence, and made a well informed decision. Maybe they didn't, who knows.
I also don't care that this is Chris and Rihanna for the record, or girl vs. boy. I care about all people who are victims of domestic abuse, and I don't think it is ever the victims fault.

I am not a Rih fan ..Umbrella ella wakes me up and Rehab is cool to listen to
her publicity machine said 'you are going to talk about it' CB just stuttered and said he still had feelings
and she was like i'm over him he looked so dumb because she is not silent...if she did hit him first he needs to speak out about it
OK you can say oh she's faking for PR she's going to go back to him but her speaking out is going to fluck up his current album sales and tour --for the Rih sympathizers So no she's not going back because she is affecting his album sales
I mean yes her album is coming out -don't like the songs I've heard but she has tons of $ and covergirl so not as important to her as to him(album/tour sales) IMO only
He talks stoopid on his twitter he needs better PR waaay better

I did not say she deserved to be beat... what I said was does she get a pass for hitting him? It is a documented fact that SHE started this altercation as well as others...
You can say what you want but women need to learn to keep their hands to themselves, not every nigga is just gonna shake the shit out of you... I know domestic abuse is extremely serious... I have seen it, as well as lived it. The same day this happened with Chris & Riri I lost a very good friend when her abusive ex-husband decided to take her life... So no need to lecture me... But I said it once & I'll say it again, you can not continue to put your hands on a man and believe that he will continue to be your punching bag. One day he will snap & we will have what resulted in Feb if not worse... SHE NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR HER OWN ACTIONS!!!! Period, if he is accountable, so the fuck is she.
