Chris Brown Says He's 'Confused' About His Public Perception

  • Rating: No Rating
'I got the people that will come out and support and then the people that don't wanna see me do anything,' he says during 'Chris Brown: The Interview,' airing Friday at 6 p.m

RICHMOND, Virginia — Chris Brown pleaded guilty to assault back in June after a physical confrontation with then-girlfriend Rihanna. He was formally sentenced in August to one year of weekly therapy sessions, five years' probation and 180 days of community-labor service.

But when it comes to the court of public opinion, Brown is discovering that the ruling hasn't been nearly as swift and tidy

"I'm confused right now as far as the public perception [of me]," he revealed during the upcoming MTV News special "Chris Brown: The Interview," which airs Friday, November 6, at 6 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. "Like, I think with my fans, they still love me, they support me, definitely. You have those people who will support you. So it's kinda like 50/50 for me. I got the people that will come out and support and then the people that don't wanna see me do anything. They basically want me in jail."

Many critics felt Brown got off the hook too easily for the altercation, which left Rihanna battered and bruised. But his sentence might, in fact, be just as difficult as jail time, according to legal expert Peter Haven.

"Labor service is not a walk in the park," Haven explained to MTV News shortly after the sentencing. "It may be better than spending 180 days in jail, but it's not a walk in the park. ... Remember, if he violates [anything], it'll be a violation against his whole plea agreement."

Brown has recently begun taking the first steps to resurrecting his career. He returned to the stage last week for the first time since the incident and electrified those in attendance at the New York radio festival Powerhouse '09. The singer was energetic and also very eager to show his remorse during his set, telling fans he promised to be a better man.

Next, Brown will set out on a Fan Appreciation Tour later this month, where he'll perform at smaller venues beginning in Houston and finishing up December 15 in New York.

I REALLY want to hear her full interview because I feel the same way as you. I just think that she played a major role in what happened that night and it's unfair of her to paint him as the longtime woman beater!! I think that night he may have gotten to his breaking point and he didn't mean for it to escalate to that point but it did. I'm sorry but if I'm driving and you're hitting on me then yes, I'm going to CLOCK your ass in the eyeball!!! Simple as that!

I don't think neither of them are telling the full story, I think he still loves her and didn't want to put it out there that she was abusive towards him because the media would have turned him into a "punk" and it would have hurt her career.

I think her PR people prepped her wonderfully to give this "I was battered behind closed doors" story. Many people came out and said she was a hot head, but no one cares about that because she's Rhianna.

I don't think people should keep condeming that boy, when other rappers, politician, and singers have done far worst. No one is boycotting BeBe W. because his wife is not famous. Steve Harvey went in hard on CB when this first happened, but just the other day he was telling BeBe to keep his head up and don't let the haters get you down we all get caught up in the heat of the moment!! WTF???

You can say what you want but women need to learn to keep their hands to themselves, not every nigga is just gonna shake the shit out of you... I know domestic abuse is extremely serious... I have seen it, as well as lived it. The same day this happened with Chris & Riri I lost a very good friend when her abusive ex-husband decided to take her life... So no need to lecture me... But I said it once & I'll say it again, you can not continue to put your hands on a man and believe that he will continue to be your punching bag. One day he will snap & we will have what resulted in Feb if not worse... SHE NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR HER OWN ACTIONS!!!! Period, if he is accountable, so the fuck is she

its a shame Bebe is a grown ass man, and Chris is still a boy. I remember during the whole BET thing & Jay said something along the lines of he's a kid that made a mistake, theres no reason for his career to be over... And the 1st thing that came to my is he KNEW that if her camp didn't let up on Chris, then the real truth would come out... And here we are at the interview... Just read transcriptions on Necole Bitchie, and like I suspected, she threw in ALL THE WAY under the effin bus... yet she claims to love him... She shouldn't have hit him, he damn sure didn't have to beat the fck out of her. But to do what she is doing now is even more sickening... The message she trying to get accross to young girls, I understand. But open up and tell the WHOLE truth...
And Steve Harvey old fake ass makes my stomach turn...

I agree the thing is she is Americas Battered Princess and there is no way they (her team) are going to let her do anything to tarnish her reputation. AOur young people aren't taught how to love one another... they are taught how to suck, phuck, kill, hate steal though and that is the real issue IMO.

I agree 100% with you on all of that!! I was reading somewhere else where the person commented that we often fall in LUST really hard and confuse that with Love (been there a couple of times) and through it all we never experience love and only realize it when we look back.

My thing is Chris got the same deal if not more than the average male walking the streets. Everybody makes mistakes. How many other celebrities have other charges and nobody pays any attention. R. Kelly has made a comeback. Actually he never left. A DUI is no better than assault because that could have resulted in death. He's been sentenced and he's learned his lesson for the most part leave him alone. I never wanted jail time for him because that wouldn't have done much. The counseling is what matters to me.

I agree w you there. Ppl are still lovin Kellz and hes a fuckin child molester!!

I think he deserves to get his life back. It boggles me that people STILL supported R.Kelly even after they saw the tape. Chris in a sense manned up for what he did, if it wasnt Rihanna would we care?

i think rhianna is one of the many women who actually likes that "nigga beaten on them" - i know strange but it just seems like that. i dont know now chick that would sit in a car and let a nigga "pound" away on them (as reported) and not get out of the car. thats crazy to me. he also told u he was going to kill u when yall get home and still not trying to exit the vehicle. see this is what happen when young people (funny, im young myself) call themselves in love. shit like this happens. lol

I wish someone would forward this discussion to GMA and let them read this on air. In part 1 of the damn interview she clearly said "they were hurtfull to each other" she basically said she did some shit to. DAMN! I was a rhi-rhi fan but i can't agree with the things she's saying. if you are worried about young girls looking up to you why are you going to lunch in a shear top with your nipple ring showin. it's her right to dress the way she wants but be and act the part you're trying to say you are. i do think chris should've taken a break, it was wrong for him to be jet skin while she was tryin to cover her bruises. she went back to him cause she knew she had a part in this. smh. i really think she's doing it for sales.

The last thing I would ever say to my sister, mother, or friend was "well sweety, you have to take responsibility for your actions, say sorry to your offender, or at least everyone who knows about it. You played a part". NO!!! Anyone who has experience in victim services knows that you NEVER say that to a victim!! Yes, IMO she does get a free pass, not because she has a vagina but because what Chris did trumps what she did. That's how the criminal justice system views it, and that's how I view it. Of course you can't keep hitting a guy and expect him not to clock you one, some men these days will. Still not justifiable though to me in my books. I would be APPAULED if my son ever did that to a woman, whether she provoked him or not. When someone is pushing you to your breaking point, you walk away.
She will not apologize, nor do I want to see her take responsibility publicly. This would paint an even worse picture for other victims around the world, because it would give them an ounce of responsibility in THEIR heads. "Maybe I did deserve this...."

I agree... I know lil girls that have done things in the bedroom I would never dream of, as a woman. They start too fckn young these days, and have NO IDEA what they are getting themselves into...

so like I said cause the has a vagina its ok? So you can beat on a man all you want, and when he beats your ass you calll fowl? No ma'am!!! Of course a man can beat you worse that you can beat him, hence keep your hands to yourself.
I would be apalled if my sons or brother beat the breaks off a heffa, too. But I'd be just as appalled if a heffa put her hands on any of them... See where I am going? Probably not. But I am tired of arguing with closed minded folks... Yes Riri is a young black woman, but Chris is a young black man. And I refuse to take part in destroying some one just because of a mistake. It isn't right. The message that the young girls are getting is a warped one...

Actually, I do see where you are going. And I'm not close minded because this is my opinion; I am actually quite well educated and experienced in the area of domestic abuse. I get that it's not OK for a woman to put her hands on a man. Great. We all knew that. But from what Rihanna apparently did, it's a far cry from "beating" Chris. That's why no one cares.
