Chris Brown Says He's 'Confused' About His Public Perception

  • Rating: No Rating
'I got the people that will come out and support and then the people that don't wanna see me do anything,' he says during 'Chris Brown: The Interview,' airing Friday at 6 p.m

RICHMOND, Virginia — Chris Brown pleaded guilty to assault back in June after a physical confrontation with then-girlfriend Rihanna. He was formally sentenced in August to one year of weekly therapy sessions, five years' probation and 180 days of community-labor service.

But when it comes to the court of public opinion, Brown is discovering that the ruling hasn't been nearly as swift and tidy

"I'm confused right now as far as the public perception [of me]," he revealed during the upcoming MTV News special "Chris Brown: The Interview," which airs Friday, November 6, at 6 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. "Like, I think with my fans, they still love me, they support me, definitely. You have those people who will support you. So it's kinda like 50/50 for me. I got the people that will come out and support and then the people that don't wanna see me do anything. They basically want me in jail."

Many critics felt Brown got off the hook too easily for the altercation, which left Rihanna battered and bruised. But his sentence might, in fact, be just as difficult as jail time, according to legal expert Peter Haven.

"Labor service is not a walk in the park," Haven explained to MTV News shortly after the sentencing. "It may be better than spending 180 days in jail, but it's not a walk in the park. ... Remember, if he violates [anything], it'll be a violation against his whole plea agreement."

Brown has recently begun taking the first steps to resurrecting his career. He returned to the stage last week for the first time since the incident and electrified those in attendance at the New York radio festival Powerhouse '09. The singer was energetic and also very eager to show his remorse during his set, telling fans he promised to be a better man.

Next, Brown will set out on a Fan Appreciation Tour later this month, where he'll perform at smaller venues beginning in Houston and finishing up December 15 in New York.

so a stilletto upside the head... nevermind... lets just agree to disagree...

Actually, I do see where you are going. And I'm not close minded because this is my opinion; I am actually quite well educated and experienced in the area of domestic abuse. I get that it's not OK for a woman to put her hands on a man. Great. We all knew that. But from what Rihanna apparently did, it's a far cry from "beating" Chris. That's why no one cares.

so like I said cause the has a vagina its ok? So you can beat on a man all you want, and when he beats your ass you calll fowl? No ma'am!!! Of course a man can beat you worse that you can beat him, hence keep your hands to yourself.
I would be apalled if my sons or brother beat the breaks off a heffa, too. But I'd be just as appalled if a heffa put her hands on any of them... See where I am going? Probably not. But I am tired of arguing with closed minded folks... Yes Riri is a young black woman, but Chris is a young black man. And I refuse to take part in destroying some one just because of a mistake. It isn't right. The message that the young girls are getting is a warped one...

The last thing I would ever say to my sister, mother, or friend was "well sweety, you have to take responsibility for your actions, say sorry to your offender, or at least everyone who knows about it. You played a part". NO!!! Anyone who has experience in victim services knows that you NEVER say that to a victim!! Yes, IMO she does get a free pass, not because she has a vagina but because what Chris did trumps what she did. That's how the criminal justice system views it, and that's how I view it. Of course you can't keep hitting a guy and expect him not to clock you one, some men these days will. Still not justifiable though to me in my books. I would be APPAULED if my son ever did that to a woman, whether she provoked him or not. When someone is pushing you to your breaking point, you walk away.
She will not apologize, nor do I want to see her take responsibility publicly. This would paint an even worse picture for other victims around the world, because it would give them an ounce of responsibility in THEIR heads. "Maybe I did deserve this...."

thank god lol. cause you ladies were on two different pages. saying the same thing....

anyhoo. I am tired of both of them now. Either get good sales from PR that is based solely off the project or shutup. Im tired of hearing abt the altercation. I wish rihanna's camp had not used this as a mktg scheme. Half the ppl are saying," good for RiRi for speaking" and the other half are Shaking Their Damn Head because they see right through her "courage to see another day". She's wasn't fooling me then and she's not fooling me now.
Even when they were just beginning to date and they were everywhere with each other, I just shook my head because we women like to be under our infatuation 24/7, yet we forget men like a bit of chase. She and Him were together everywhere.. when were they going to have time to miss each other? You're going to get tired of each other and you're going to start acting up. sad but true. I saw a break up coming a mile away. But I didnt expect them to be smashing each others heads in.

hmph, its a lesson to be learned--if its not a good time to come out--don't waste the loot--PLEASE do something else for a minute..WRITE and beef up your catalog--so you can be sitting pretty for the rest of your life.

write and go to college--and come back as a heart throb in a couple of years or so..or try action movies, BEEF up! and then come back..

it seems like his camp has not saved any money or something..you can't push people AND money is tight for most now.

If he actually takes some time--he may discover a whole new love that makes him money while laying low from the fiasco..he needs to cut down his entourage--that shit is expensive..

I'd get my acting chops in order and write some songs for stars..JMO

I just have to say something . I totally agree that Chris and Rihanna both made a huge mistake that night but Rihanna still acts like she's done nothing ! No one deserves to be beaten like that , I don't know what happened in that car but be a woman and accept responsibility for your part in the situation . Lets just be honest ..... how many male celebrities beat the hell out of their wives on a regular basis ? They rape women , have sex with children and even abuse their own children everyday but no one ever says anything about it , believe me .... it's common knowledge what these people do ! Jay Z , Gucci Mane , DMX , Naomi Campbell have all assaulted people ..... right now BeBe Winans wife would like to know why Oprah is still supporting her abusive husband . Come on .... Jay z and Gucci Mane are both caught on tape punching women in the face but people have no problem supporting them . Because it's Rihanna she has more rights than the average woman ? I think it's sick how we pick and choose ..... judge who we wanna judge and crucify who we wanna crucify ! Let this young man live his life .... how many times have you had to whoop some ass because somebody went to far ? I know women that beat on men and the men get to the point where they get tired just like we do . It's easy to say that ' oh they should just walk away ' or ' No woman deserves to get hit like that ' . Let me tell you , I have known some crazy bishes in my day and they all deserved to get their ass beat down ! Could you walk away if a teenager or someone smaller than you comes up and starts beating your ass ? You never how you would react until you are in that position .

Cookie Pie i definetly agree w/ you. i also agree CB should have taken a few years away. went back to acting, writing, producing, let the situation die down. as for Rhianna she didnt need the publicity this bad to sell her album. she wants to help other girls but where are the reports of her donating funds or time to causes to fight domestic violence. where is her foundation. where is the footage of her speaking out to women, teens, young girls. there are so many different things she could have done that would have made a lasting impression on the public and further solidified her empire. throwing CB under the bus like this is terrible. i am not saying he was right but she said they had been in fights before. if u know your man is liable to beat your ass if he gets mad why provoke him. some men are just abusers, some men will never beat a woman and some men walk a thin line. i feel CB was already walking a thin line b/c of his past. if u back a man into a corner he will lash out but the ? is how.

Exactly ... I agree that he should have kept a low profile because right now he is seems desperate to make people love him again and really he needs this time to himself to think about what he did and why he did it because we cant just walk around and let people push our buttons like like that . The true test will be , if it happens again will he react the same or be smarter and make better decisions . He really beat her ass bad which means he was out of control and out of his mind ! I don't know who his publicist is but they rae advising him wrong . I would take the acting , writing and behind the scenes route right now !
