Back in school, getting yet another degree... anyway this week's discussion in my Cultural Diversity class was about genocide... it referenced of course hitler and the Jews... Turkey vs. Armenia, etc... then asked has there been instances of Genocide in America... i decided not to go the easy route and discuss the American Indians... I chose the genocide of blacks in America...

here's an excerpt of an article I found online...

"Indirect genocide, then, can be expressed in part in the self-destructive adaptations of victim groups to the deprivations of life inflicted upon them by the larger society. In these situations, the victim group appears to be the cause of its own problems and the role of larger social conditions is discounted or ignored entirely."

I agree and this is the sme story in not just Bmore it is the story of any hood USA. I think the "The Man is holding me back" is a cop out too. I too deal with the BS I have to deal with from the man to keep my job even when i want to tell them to have several seats and get out of my face. I just know that such a large segment of us are severely broken spiritually and morally that they don't even try anymore. It is a damn shame too. Again I do not disagree with not one thing you are saying I am just saying they set the wheels in motion for things to get where they are.

I've had white people talk to me any kind of way and I'm still here and they got walking papers for various reasons. I'm not saying the system is fair. I'm saying that you don't change it talking about what the white man won't let you do. That is a cop out far too many people use.

I do not disagree with you there si so much to be said but there social experiments put in place that were designed to stagnate our generation way before we got here. They know our power and strength they have done everything to make sure enough of of us can't see it in our selves to make a difference like our mothers and fathers did during the civil rights movement. As for the affluent in MD i am very aware and they are trying to make sure that ish doesn't spread either.

I could not agree with you more...especially the pg county school systems in maryland, which i'm a product of.  I went to a high school, 90% black in a somewhat affluent area. I can not say that they totally gave up on us, but they surely made it seem like we have limits. When I applied to college, we were guided to apply for certain schools with easier acceptance rates and where you could get In with lower SAT scores. even the SAT prep course was taught in a way so that you could just get by, not so that you could do well on it.

It was like we were told that we should be happy with just barely being average and getting by and taking the easy way out.. So many accepted this because they trusted these educators. I for one cannot accepted that.

I mentor some kids and see how the education system has failed them, to help them see that they can  and to college and be about something, even if the school is garbage. We have to help each other see that we can be better than what is put in front of us.

I'm going to have to piggy back off CCDreamin', I think it's 50/50. On the one hand I do believe that society as a whole has contributed to the genocide of African Americans (mentally, physically, & economically), BUT I also think we play our own part in self destruction, especially now. I'm an 80s baby, so growing up I saw the after effects of the 60s & 70s marches and I saw how that community had each others back, the present AA community doesn't have that. We tear each other down & kill each other faster than than anything. We can say all day that its the white mans fault for separating our families way back when, but if 3-5 generations before us were able to move some of those obstacles, why can't present & up in coming generations? This hate we have for each other (black people killing each other, bring each other down) is self inherited, we pass this mess down, pretty soon we won't need the other cultures of the US to slap us in the face with racism, we'll hate ourselves enough. We have organized gangs of African Americans that kill each other blacks over street corners that neither of them will never own.

And then at times I wonder if its just embedded in black people....look at the violence that goes on in certain parts of Africa. Africans aren't rallying and killing other races to take back their land, they're rallying and killing/raping other Africans to take land from them. Should this blame also be placed on white people or slavery? Sure it can be said that they're doing it b/c of diamonds, oil, or other natural resources wanted by white races, BUT still Africans kill those who look like them, in large numbers at that, so is this just a survival of the fittest trait embedded in black people?

I wholeheartedly agree with this part. I think we threw morals out the window and adopted this "get it how you live" attitude, even if that meant stepping on and over the next person, who may be doing even worse than you.

Looking back, probably 10/11 the grade, when I took a college prep course with other kids from different school systems and noticed the difference. then I had my counselor ask me, why did I want to go to a certain univeristy known for engineering , because  blacks do not do well in science and math.... and she was black.I proved her wrong but that can be real discouraging to a teenager.

Exactly, Sheli, WE adopted it. No one forced it on us despite the fact that that wasn't how the generations that came before us succeeded. I agree with your post btw.

I see both sides of the argument...

I know several kids from affluent families that chose to be drug dealers and dope fiends, so yes, they chose that life...

But what about the crack babies? What about the 3rd or 4th generation teenage mother?

Are any of the things we see as destroying the black community from within, fueled by outside sources?

CC I am in no way justifying or agreeing and I too believe in those quotes with all of my heart.  My posts about the genocide come from my understanding of what has been done to tear so many of us so far down it was not by happenstance. I am not even talking about the initial afflictions that we suffered when we first came here. I am talking that at a time when we were making strides when they saw us unifying they launched a vicous plan of destruction.... Cointelpro (I will post links when I get home) I understand. The strides we were making during the civil rights movement scared them. I do not believe they won and I have not given up but I understand why some have. I agree with the initial statement that just me made yes we are carrying out the genocide on ourselves but we didn't put this in motion. many of our people are disenfranchised and many have lost faith and hope. It's not right but s*** it is understandable. As hard as I have had it and I didn't wlaways have ideal situations growing up but I know I got way more love, guidance and exposure then my cousins who never made it out.

Just  take a look at this link to get where I am coming from :

Yes, I hate the welfarfe system sometimes. I don't know what rules other states had in place concerning the welfare system, but in FL there was a period where if you received any type of benefits, you had to work, volunteer or go to school. To me that was one of the best rules the govt implemented concerning welfare. Some individuals realized that they'd make more working 40hrs at minimum wage than if they received in public assistance, so they got off the system and got jobs. Those old requirements were done away with, now in FL the lazier you are the more you get & the more kids you have the more you get. I know of people who were actually encouraged to quit their jobs or cut back on their hours to get govt assistance that they actually need to help maintain their household and some people actually go for it and sometimes I don't blame them. Here you were killing yourself working 40hrs for peanuts, but now you can quit your job & make the same amount. Inmates get public assistance of $250/month straight out of prison, no questions and they can renew on a semi-annual basis, where's the motivation to even try to get a job? And yes i know that black people aren't the biggest users of public assistance, but I think the stigma of being on public assistance is more negative when it's us.
