If any of you are like me, you're always perusing job sites and the postings at your company looking for the next rung on the corporate ladder. Should you get the interview, you can you know what to be paid? Sure, sites like salary.com and many job search sites will show you an amount based on what their paid users list as the average income for a position, but how can you know what to really expect?

I am a big fan of the Occupational Outlook Handbook that is published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It has payrates for many different positions, and lists the different scales (lowest 10% to highest 25%). I like to take the rate the government lists as average for a job and compare it to what sites like salary.com suggest.

This site is also helpful for when you want to make a career move. I was able to use this handbook to convice a friend to pursue the extra schooling to become a dentist instead of a dental hygienist, and a another friend used to to decide to stay a high school teacher instead of going for a Ph.D. to become a professor.

The BLS website is a great tool, you can find unemployment by industry, region, etc. I'm finding this extremely helpful in my deciding when and where to relocate.

AND, part of the explanation given was......"that's how they do in Texas. The women take care of the men."
Won't be me. I've done the supportive female to the point of being Momma #2 and that didn't really work for me.
HA! Hey, in defense of Texas men, you found a rotten apple. There are some bums here just like any other state. I believe women come here expecting everyone to be a Southern gentleman, and they end up with a steak-loving drunk. Sorry. :(

OK....lol..I'm gonna make a long story short. Met my girlfriends brother long distance - via FB and her. Corresponded, really hit it off. Went to visit after 3-4 months......he was.......unacceptable. Over 30, no where near having himself together ( I swear he got an apt because i was coming to visit), no ambition, cheap as f*** AND he had Skinny Di** Syndrome - loose condom and all. Turned me off to all of Texas....lol

What turned you off about Dallas? Most of my friends and family that moved here hate how everything is so spread out. I'm a city girl, couldn't imagine living in a suburb here, that's too much driving. Tracy said:

Headsup..if you are looking at Charlotte, NC..Think again....my hometown..born and bred....It's bleak here as well. Competition here is fierce for jobs..even the part time jobs......Charlotte is not all that...TRUST AND BELIEVE. A nice place to live but not a nice place to live life.I had two friends and a cousin to move from San Diego and Los Angeles..They wanted to give Charlotte a try in the 'boom years"...The biggest complaint that I got from all three was lack of things to do...What I mean by that is that there wasnt enough cultural diversity for them here....They said that the cultural and art "scene' was truly lacking...Also job opportunities were a huge factor in them leaving...Just wasnt enough options/opportunities for them here... I ask if they miss Charlotte...the affordable housing yes..but the city itself...NO...But again please come and visit and make your determination....Im personally looking at Phoenix....it's up and coming....Centrally located to Las VEgas/San Diego/LA/Cost of living is doable....Gonna try to jump on the bandwagon before everyone else discovers it...
Hey ladies. Long time, no post for me. Think long and hard before moving to Phoenix. I live in AZ and there's alot of jobs but because AZ state education is cheaper than other equally qualified schools, there's alot of fierce competition for [professional] jobs. There's also alot of non qualified/non educated ppl though, so if you're looking for a job that'll pay 15-16$ an hr and you just have experience and no degree or an associates degree at minimum, you can definitely find that in AZ.
I would advise against moving to a city that lacks corporations/fortune 500 companies when considering moving for job opportunities. Also stay away from cities that has alot of thriving small businesses. Reason being- when the economy busts, small business are the first to lay ppl off and/or go belly up. I learned this the hard way (I live in Tucson). Phoenix is beautiful and its over 100 degrees at 11pm at night in the summertime (ha), but theres ALOT to do there and the wages are pretty good overall. JUST BEWARE- there's not alot of blk men in AZ in general, but there's more in Phx than in any other city.

Everything you said is spot on! The weather and scenery is AMAZING! And I'm a constant fixture in Vegas, although I need to step my Cali game up a lil bit lol. Not to mention you're just hours from all the beautiful Mexican beaches. I love it here, but the economy has taken a hit tremendously these last few years. It's funny b/c my dream destination has been Charlotte for a few years but after reading this post I'm not sure

Been pondering the move from NC To AZ for quite a while now...Change of scenery would actually probably do me some good....Traveled with mgr out there a couple times for biz meetings.....Absolutely fabulous out there....True....Bruh's are few in far in between...but at this stage in the game....'What will be, will be... Cost ofLiving is doable, plus you're driving distance away from LA/San Diego/Las VEgas....Probably would miss NC since that where mostly friends and family are...but could get use the 300+ days of sunshine and palm trees.
Good to Know -THANKS!!!

I'm looking into move to Austin or San Antonio. Houston is great for the Arts, but it's just too many of us there. I know that sounds like some Uncle Ruckus type hate, but I can't be around too many ghetto black people. The ghettos there are insane. I love my people, but just not from Houston.

And I don't want my children to sound like Beyonce. I don't care what race you are or what part of Houston you grew up in, you will more than likely sound like a hick.
