HIV infection rate skyrockets among some D.C. black women

he HIV infection rate for heterosexual African American women in the District’s poorest neighborhoods nearly doubled in two years, from 6.3 percent to 12.1 percent, according to a study released Wednesday by the D.C. Department of Health.

The large increase reflects wider testing of people who were previously unaware of their status and possibly a still-rising rate of new infections in that high-risk group, officials said.

The disease remains at epidemic levels in Washington. In releasing the study, District health officials announced new recommendations for doctors and other health-care providers to start treatment immediately for all people newly diagnosed with HIV instead of waiting for evidence that someone’s immune system has been severely damaged.

...

The annual snapshot also gives a more accurate picture than in previous reports for the number of people living with HIV or AIDS because of an improved tracking system that eliminates duplication. There were 14,465 people, or about 2.7 percent of District residents older than 12, who were living with HIV or AIDS in 2010, the year covered in the report. That prevalence rate — the total percentage of people in a population with the condition or disease at a given time — is among the highest for any U.S. city.

Unlike other cities where the at-risk population might be concentrated among intravenous drug users or men who have sex with men, Washington has a very “mixed epidemic,” with a huge burden falling on heterosexual African Americans. Officials said 90 percent of all women with HIV are black. Pappas estimated that 20 percent to 30 percent of the District’s HIV-positive population “is probably walking around infected and don’t know it,” he said.

Other experts said the findings of the study were worrying.

“While recognizing the limitations of a sample-based study, it seems the HIV epidemic among heterosexuals may be more significant than the previous study estimated,” said Michael Rhein, senior vice president at the Institute for Public Health Innovation, a nonprofit group that coordinates several regional programs supporting people with HIV/AIDS.

He called the new rates alarming. In the worst scenario, he said, they reflect “a true increase in the HIV rate among heterosexuals and women living in areas of concentrated poverty.”

very scary stats. Sad to think that some people are walking around infecting people left and right and don't even know or care. Casual sex shouldn't have to equate to an early tombstone. Black people are still only around 13% of the population but make up for 40% of the new HIV cases as of last year. Something is seriously off. Is nobody strapping up anymore? Sheesh!

just imagine how many hetero or bi men that have it there....the ladies are getting it from somewhere. So these stats also suggest that the men must obviously be sleeping with several women unprotected....did I get that right?

if only real life were like that one Marsha Ambrosius video when the people had pluses and minues floating over their head to indicate their HIV status....but it's not and you got people lying because they are embarassed...such a crazy world.

People need to go out with the mindset that everyone has it until proven that they don't

I know right. Good to just assume the WORST after reading this!!

It's best to be a little judgmental cause those odds are not favorable.

when i was in college in dc, they tested one of the female dorms & 49% of the girls tested turned out to be positive for HIV.  i don't know the rest of the statistics from campus, but think about being 18, starting your adult life, & finding out you have HIV.

OHMIGOSH! That's horrible!

HIV scare is just that a scare

I believe it too...I take things like this to heart because I had a cousin in the military and remember them telling me that an entire platoon in their company had Chlamydia and Herpes but a few of them were nondeployable, which means they were walking around with AIDS. The top brass was pissed about that because they were set to leave to Iraq. And these people HAD TO get tested in order to go. Even after he left and came back from overseas said that people didn't care and were f****** like rabbits in "theater". Young people too - fresh from high school and college, and mostly black and hispanic.

So imagine all the people NOT GETTING TESTED...at all.

Yeah, I believe it's a LOT of 15 to now 40 year olds walking around with the monster. And that blows my mind.

Get tested and just know...damn.
