I'm sick of this tacky shit....

  • Rating: No Rating
When I saw Ashley's post about weave it prompted me to post (which I know I haven't been doing a lot lately) a hair vent. Mind you I've started a hair journey earlier this year. I've made it a point to research and understand hair in general so that I could understand and be more patient with my own hair.

Before I started my journey I didn't know why keratin was, or why synthetic glue was so wrong or what the hell a pre-poo was. With the help from B&N, my sisters here at BA and other hair forums I'm learning to be a master of my own hair.

Now that I've said that I'd like to step on my soap box. I was at an Indian store and a lady saw my basket had henna, lemon and lime juice so she naturally started talking to me about hair. She told me about a hair salon not far from where we were. I went there as soon as a I left. I got there and checked out her price list. And once she came over and started speaking with me I assume she thought I was there to inquire about getting waxed or threaded because as soon as I started inquiring about the hair products that she used she became uneasy and I knew right then it was time to leave.

I say this to say it is the most frustrating thing in the world that we are the most careless and carefree culture of women when it comes to our dollars and our hair. But, we are treated the worst, understood the least and at times are the most desperate. It upsets me how many cultures could benefit from learning how to do OUR hair but are so closed minded, so fearful and are so ignorant. So, few sisters venture out of their comfort zone and because we haven't been more vocal about advertisements, hairstylists, respectful customer service we are no further in our hair woes than when slave ships sailed across the seas. So to any beauticians/hairstylist/licensed techs you're only great as you'll allow yourself to be. Learn hair, not just a "certain" type of hair. And to my sisters understand that our dollars speak volumes and learn to be more mindful of how and where you spend it....peace.

CJ, you are absolutely right! I have had two non-black stylists that were great. I will not purchase products from anyone that treats me like I'm not a customer. I have a huge problem with beauty supply owners who talk down to customers or tuurn rude when I ask simple questions. I'm incredibly polite and well-spoken, I also research items before I shop. I swear many Asian shop owners want an ignorant nigga or spic to walk in, because they'll overpay to look a hot mess. I spend too much money on my hair for you to not let me touch something, compare something, etc. A lot of places don't even give you prices by phone. I won't set foot in a store that won't answer certain questions by phone. Sorry for the rant, I just hate bad service because of racist assumptions.

CJ I know it can be frustrating, try not to get discouraged... Understand that many people just are not exposed to women like us. I started frequenting this Indian (east Indian) salon about 11 years ago and when i first went I only went for threading I built a rapport and eventually tried other services in the salon (sugaring, henna, makeup, & mendi). Other cultures have to be taught about us the same way we too need to learn about other cultures. My grandma is Indian and tha always made me want to learn about the culture. Don't be discouraged or frustrated...some of us are just as closed minded to others as we are to them...

I had that happen. I had to check this one Asian lady who worked at the bss that I frequented when I was wearing a sew in. And everytime I went there she had an attitude and I still continued to give her my business. Well, this one particular day she broke her last straw with me. I had a bad day a work, my car was hit during rush hour and I was in a pissy mood. I asked her about the hair and to let me feel the texture well when she rolled her eyes as she turned I went off...not in a ghetto way mind you...I stopped right then and said excuse me loud enough for other customers could hear me and said how many of you are regualrs at this store? How many of you EVER get the kind of help that you need from this lady right here (as I turned and pointed towards her). I said if we are this unsatified then why the hell do we keep coming back?

As I left I saw a few others follow me..and that's when she ran after us and apologized. I've gone back to that store but trust and believe they respect my dollar.

My primary hair dresser is not black...but he is trained in ALL types of hair....all types. His clients range from black, spanish, white, arab indian.... he knows hair and continues to train even though he has been doing hair for 20 years. That to me is key...some folks are lazy and don't really understand the science that is HAIR.

Thanks Siren, I'm trying to keep faith and not get discouraged. It's hard. I may just go back and actually sit in her chair and have her to henna my hair...maybe she's never touched a black woman's hair before, I could break her down.

Talk about commnalities... When I had my henna done for the 1st time in an Indian Salon I loved the color results the styling not so much.... I had to coach her through the process of blowing my hair out...they don't style their hair the same way we do usually so that can be problematic. I did get a nice roller set once.

I only deal with black healthy hair stylists and I do most of my own stuff in between.

I only use dominican products and purchase those on-line..I have not been in a beauty supply this year..
I can't...and most of the products there are not healthy and contain mineral oil, and sodium sulfates or parabens.
I just can't..they only care about fudging up the hair until you leave--it could fall out the next day--they do not care about anything but the loot.
