So besides losing weight I have decided to grow my hair natural because the perms & I are not working out at all! Plus I always wanted to try to go natural but never put forth the effort, so now I'm doing so.

So what type of natural hair tips do you all have, being products, how to take care of it etc. Any help is appreciated^_^

Smooches & Blessings!

First and foremost, welcome to the natural club!! Twist outs work best for me. I like the curly afro look. When I was transitioning I bought some flexi rods and used those. That kept my natural roots healthy w/o damaging the permed ends. It was a lot of work doing this every 2-3 days but it really helped keeping my hair healthy. U really should read up on keeping natural hair healthy it is a process. The main thing it needs is moisture. I deep condition every 3 days, and do a regular conditioner if I wash in between. I use hair rules shampoos and conditioners, jessie curls deep conditioner, and miss jessie's curly pudding for my twist outs and shingling. I've attached some links that will help you. And if you decide for any reason to straighten your hair after being natural, I recommend the maxi glide flat iron.

And also type in natural or kinky hair into youtube and you will get lots of cool results. and tips on how to comb, wash, treat your hair. hit me up and I can email you tips. Its just waaaaay too much info to put here.

Welcome to the natural side, and like Zaria said, definitely keep it moisturized. It's going to require a lot of patience at first, but you can get through it. Hang tough. Being natural comes with so many rewards once you've gotten through the first year or two.

It looks like Melyssa Ford has joined the natural look...If so, I'm proud of her. I hope more celebs swing that way.

Congrats! I posted some tips in the beauty group, so you can check those out. The in-between stage is scary, but I got my ends trimmed every month and pressed my hair at first. Eventually, I wore braids until it grew out and I had enough hair to twist. That process took about 6 months. Good luck, and if you need any more tips, feel free to PM me.

Good for you! I think most of us(African American Women) never really understood how to take care of our hair...we just went for the fab styles, however moisture is KEY!!! Remember it's not how to make the hair grow (it's going to do that unless you have a hair issue), it's how to keep the hair that grows on your head- so focus on your ENDS. Good Luck and also remember patience, patience, patience ;-)

when i transitioned i waited 2 months after my last relaxer and went to micro braids. i stayed in braids for 7 months so i would have new growth without having to cut all my hair off. my hair was past my shoulders relaxed, and i just couldnt bear to chop it all off. i still had hair that was straight, but i started with 2 strand twists until i had enough hair where i felt comfortable cutting off the rest of the relaxer. i still was hurt when i cut off the relaxer, but honestly, after a week i was fine. my hair is so much healthier than it was before, and in less than a year it grew longer than it was before i cut off the relaxer.

an added bonus for me is my hair smells so good now. no more chemical smells for me! i dont really use any name brand stuff, i have my own mixture that i use. i take a spray bottle and add leave in mayo conditioner, olive oil, carrot oil, just a little water, and jasmine. i also use coconut conditioner. it leaves me hair smelling fab and my husband loves it. the key is to use natural oils.

I went natural again. lol

after whining and complaining. my hair was already short anyways so I just chopped it off. snip snip bish. for me it is the best way. it forces me to carry it out, as opposed to going months without a perm and getting frustrated with the transition. I was on diasporahaircare.com like it was my life. there was a natural section. and then my lil fotki album so i could get encouraged, as well applauding my other natural sisters. this will be interesting given the location I'm in and the humidity it brings.
