Recently a friend of mine applied for her dream job and ended up not getting it. Shes convinced she didn't get it because of a DUI charge on her record that she received when she was 21. What do you all think? Has your record ever kept you (or someone you know) from getting a job or something else you really wanted/needed?

How many yrs ago was that? Doesn't seem right that should have mattered.

Well is lied to them that could be a reason. Usually when I interview people (financial company)I usually know the basic question and answer but later it will depend on honesty. We want honest people.
It was early last year, she's 22 now. I think she was super qualified for the position and I'm trying to convince her that her record had nothing to do with her not being hired but at the same time, idk...

What type of job was she trying to get?

this actually happened to a friend of mine recently. however, the director of HR told her it wasnt the dui, it was because she didnt state that she had one in the interview, and didnt list it on the formal application. that made them think she was dishonest

She was trying to work for a certain urban magazine. From what she says, there was no place on the application or during the interview to talk about her "misdemeanor conviction" so idk if they just expected her to broadcast it or not.

She should look into getting her record expunged

Maybe the DUI was the case. However, the job market is still difficult and there are plenty of positions that are perfect, even over qualified for, yet you still won't get it. It could be any little thing down to the interviewee being lackluster. It may seem like a downer but there will be plenty of opportunities to properly use her skill set.

Agreed... And also being upfront about it in the meantime...

You said DUI at 21 like she's 30.  Most background checks go back 7 years so she should really look into having it expunged.  She needs to network - LinkedIn, Industry events, etc. In this economic climate who you know trumps what you know all day.

I know someone that happened to. He lied about it on his application but the HR dept told him it was because they caught the lie. The charge was a misdemeanor and wouldn't have prevented him from getting the job but lying about it did. They told him it would be two years before he could apply for anything in their company again. Shame too because the job was his until they did the background check.

I live in DC this happens to my friends all the time. Security clearances here are no joke! My home girl said she hasn't done drugs. They checked her record and ten years ago she failed a drug test. She got fired. My dad lived in NY in the 70's and beat up his old girls boyfriend. It stopped him from getting a job 40 years later. He never went to community service, LOL and has had several jobs since then  So you have to be overly honest these days
