Woman illegally downloads 24 songs, fined to tune of $1.9 million

(CNN) -- A federal jury Thursday found a 32-year-old Minnesota woman guilty of illegally downloading music from the Internet and fined her $80,000 each -- a total of $1.9 million -- for 24 songs.
Jammie Thomas-Rasset's case was the first such copyright infringement case to go to trial in the United States, her attorney said.
Attorney Joe Sibley said that his client was shocked at fine, noting that the price tag on the songs she downloaded was 99 cents.
She plans to appeal, he said.
Cara Duckworth, a spokeswoman for the Recording Industry Association of America, said the RIIA was "pleased that the jury agreed with the evidence and found the defendant liable."
"We appreciate the jury's service and that they take this as seriously as we do," she said.
Thomas-Rasset downloaded work by artists such as No Doubt, Linkin Park, Gloria Estefan and Sheryl Crow.
This was the second trial for Thomas-Rasset. The judge ordered a retrial in 2007 after there was an error in the wording of jury instructions.
The fines jumped considerably from the first trial, which granted just $220,000 to the recording companies.
Thomas-Rasset is married with four children and works for an Indian tribe in Minnesota.

I really hope she has a successful appeal. The real crook is iTunes, I hate their software and how it hijacks the music you purchase. I stopped downloading and just went back to purchasing CDs. After losing an iPod and having two computers crash, I learned the hardware. And their backing up service isn't really reliable, they're going to start charging based on the number of songs. My paying $1.25 a song isn't enough?! No thanks.

This is why my happy azz stop downloading music...... I just wait for someone I know to buy a CD I want music from and I download it from them...I refuse to buy music anymore...Im not getting these rich, ungratful, jackasses any richer LOL...Im just saying

Ugh it seems this is in fact her appeal, because it refers to a prior judgement. They should have fined her a few hundred dollars at most! Perhaps, as she is of Indian decent , she can go live on an Indian reservation and claim Sovereignty! For over a million it would be worth it.

I didnt know illegal downloading was still possible...I wonder where she got the songs from. Either way, why fine her and not the site that let her do it...1.9 million what??!!! That is too much for a couple .99 cent songs. They wouldn't see a dime from me...As rich as these stupid ppl are? I will never by a freaking CD again. For real they owe me some damn money, as many CD's I used to buy.
