Plus its tax free but of course you will have to pay U.S. taxes on it but if your income is $91, 500 or less you can make and election to exclude from U.S. taxation.

If you don't negotiate allowance you will be screwed coz items like rent are paid on an annual basis. It a whole lifestyle for expats living in the middle east

I've done it.  It depends on who you work for and where you are?  My job was chill - I had no complaints.  There are some things that you would have to sacrifice, but your basic needs are taken care for you.  If you're super picky and have to have this and that - It won't work.  Since I was prior service - I had no problem.

I had the opportunity came ver close to accepting the offer... I eventually bitched out... Had everything set up, including school for the kids.

I'm not sure if it was my church praying about it, or watching The Kingdom too many times; but I eventually chickened out...
