-check out your local library for books on investments, educate yourself with the terminology (stocks, bonds, t-bills etc.) before you give someone else your $$$ to manage
-take investment courses, in Canada it's the CSC, Canadian Securities Course or I believe in the US it's the Series 7
-talk to your local bank manager, most banks usually have an investment arm like a brokerage firm etc. for some tips

Then familiarize yourself with how to read stocks, bonds, etc. Assess whether you are risky or risk averse. Maybe start off with a G and go to a financial advisor (Charles Schwab or Fidelity maybe). Remember, it is very important to diversify your portfolio (meaning spread out your distribution over several types of investments). Mutual funds are a good way to start out and you can always try municipalities or treasury stocks.
