A Stripper’s Job Is Harder Than You Think…

I spotted this video over at Zeralyn.com . The poem is titled “Damn” and is by Loany G. It sparked this blog. Now, I can only speak as an outsider on this issue because I’ve never slid down a pole a day in my life but this poem opened my eyes as to what strippers in urban clubs go through and I gotta ask, is it worth it?

Let’s go back to the dawn of time. Women have always been used for male entertainment. Seriously, I’m sure the only reason Eve was created was because Adam was bored. Women in nearly every culture are to be seen and not heard and for us to get the slightest bit of respect is a battle in itself. It seems that the only professions that women aren’t directly in competition with men are modeling and stripping. Even then, men are in total control.

Imagine being a college graduate but your degree doesn’t mean a thing in the workplace. You work 10 hour days just to make ends meet while the men around you are getting bonuses and enhancing daily. Everyday you turn on the television, get on the internet, open a magazine and you see another chick come up by using her sexuality. Either she took off her clothes, slept with the right celebrity or happened to be in just enough music videos to where her face became recognizable.

Now let’s make it a little more real. Say you lose your job. In the economy today it’s hard as hell to find another one, and your savings are running low. You need money and you need it fast. You put your pride to the side, say “F” it, pack your bags, gas your car up and head to another city to take a stab at stripping. Atleast you know then that you’ll be leaving with money in hand right? But you get there and things aren’t as fancy as they seem on TV. You have to deal with the other dancers not respecting you. You have the men in the club not respecting you, treating you like an animal all so you can make rent this month. You have men propositioning you for sex everywhere you turn, treating you as if you’re not an educated woman just because you choose to take your clothes off. And let’s not get on society’s lack of respect for dancers. But you swallow it all, deal with it all, everyday just to keep a roof over your head.

Not every stripper has this same story, but many do, otherwise why would they do it. Sit back and think about what they have to put up with. Now ask a stripper why she STILL does it. I would assume that it’s because she has created a life for herself that she has become accustomed to and wants to maintain that.

  1. Being a stripper is really hard. Every time I worked there will be eyes looking at me with complete discrimination. I hope those people will change someday. Thank you for sharing!
