Atlanta Falcon Arrested For Trying To Keep A Woman From Commiting Suicide

I mean I get it, but I just don't get it.

Atlanta Falcons defensive end John Abraham was arrested late Monday, accused of obstructing police and firefighters at the scene of an attempted suicide. He is the second player from the Atlanta football team to be arrested in a week.

Abraham entered an area responders had cordoned off with crime scene tape, while trying to talk down a woman who was threatening to jump from a floor of a high-rise hotel, said Atlanta Police spokesman John Chafee.

A firefighter ordered the football player repeatedly to leave the scene, Chafee said. But Abraham refused, even when police intervened.

"He again refused and insisted on continuing further into the scene," Chafee said. "Officers then took Mr. Abraham into custody."

He was charged at the county jail with two misdemeanor counts of obstruction. Abraham's relationship with the woman, if any, was not immediately clear.

According to CNN affiliate WSB, the woman did not jump and was taken to a local hospital.

I understand that he was trying to do what he felt was right and for that reason I feel he shouldn't have been arrested. HOWEVER, I do understand that he needed to let the emergency responders do their job because this could have ended way worse than it did. He meant well but he may have needed to back up a bit. It's a catch 22.

I think it's obvious that he knew who this woman was and was just trying to help talk her down.  If he's in the way at the scene, yes, remove him so they can do their jobs, but actually charging him is a stretch.  Emotions get high in that situation, I know I would probably act a fool if I knew someone about to jump off a damn building.

Whether he knew her or not I don't think it should have went as far as him getting arrested, maybe contained. If he knew her then I completely understand why he acted the way he did but if he didn't know her, as someone who's lost someone to suicide I understand how he could try to stop her from committing suicide and ignoring what the police were saying. You just never know what people have gone through that would explain why people do the things they do.

Abraham entered an area responders had cordoned off with crime scene tape he broke the law by crossing the 'physical line' (so they had to contain him) set by the responders, his heart was in the right place, but next time he should let them do their jobs and stand back.
