After nearly a decade since his last album was released, the man of mystery, Maxwell has returned with an album strictly for the more mature audience. Maxwell, regardless of his hiatus has a way of capturing his audience like a black widow does its prey.
BLACKsummer's night is the first installment of the trilogy series.
Its evident Maxwell has been on an emotional roller coaster when it comes to the idea of loving that special someone. Opening with the bluesy number
Bad Habits & perhaps one of my faves has a horn arrangement that takes it there! Definitely a track I prefer to listen with a nice glass of wine, while two-stepping with your significant other.
Artists these days lack substance. Despite the thin track listing from start to finish, this album is the most concise example of what substance is. In successful single,
Pretty Wings, as pretty of a song, in its true essence is very sad, as it speaks on a love lost. On the flip side,
Stop the World laments the idea of love conquers all. Its just you & your significant other against the world, with no worries, nor boundaries.
The entire release is a highlight within itself especially when it comes to the live instrumentation. Which separates Maxwell from these candy artists of today.
BLACKsummer's night, as dark as it might be, sheds light on the vulnerability of man & his feelings. For what its worth it makes you appreciate that man/woman in your life more. Maxwell has made a triumphant return & with it he brought back the essence of REAL music.
