Court Overturns Oscar Pistorius’ Lesser Charge; Verdict Upgraded From Manslaughter To Murder

In October, Olympic blade runner, Oscar Pistorius, was sentenced to five years in jail on a manslaughter conviction. Apparently in South Africa that doesn’t matter, because the judge has now upgraded his verdict to murder.

You may recall Pistorius was accused of killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in February 2013 after shooting four times through a locked toilet door. He claimed that he thought she was an intruder. Pistorius is currently on house arrest after serving a year behind bars. He will now have to return to court to be re-sentenced, for murder. The minimum sentence for murder in South Africa is 15 years.  The judge does have the discretion to lower it, however.

Either way, Pistorius will be back behind bars. He will receive his new sentence next year.
