well both of my parents are black but i'm VERY light skinned and this even disguists me. i hate that the only thing dark women are seen for is sex and i was just talking to my mom about this earlier; well actually all shades of black women are looked at like this since now black men seem to be amazed by hispanic or "exotic" looking women. everyone's saying, "oh its just multicultural and it should be" bitch please! it shouldnt be that way, theres so many things that cater to other races and its sad to say but hip hop and urban modeling is the only thing thats "for us" and all these rappers are dumb for having these girls in their videos because how many black girls pit bull or any other hispanic artist has in their videos? i hate that jeremih video. i think a skinny dark skinned girl would have been PERFECT for that role but he gave it to some busted lookin chick just because she has light skin. smdh...and @california, why would you call them bitches? just because they're in videos? why you have to knock someones hustle, they gotta eat just like you do. women like you are the reason why men disrespect us so much.

Skin color shouldn't make a difference it should be quality of your character. I don't think ALL men/ballers are color struck (or at least I hope not). But I do think that alot of them give preference to light skin / bi-racial women or darker skinned if they look exotic and have really attractive facial features. Sadly, I've encountered a man who judged whether or not he'd date a woman by complexion using the stupid brown paper bag test. Maybe one day everyone will realize that beauty comes in many shapes/colors and then all black will be accepted as being beautiful.

I agree. I am so over this light skin/dark skin/exotic or whatever labels they're putting on us. I have to deal with my own day to day issues that which by the way is more important then skin color. This is getting really tired and I don't care about these video chicks anyway.

Yes Cali!!! YESSSSS!!! I don't want to see my black sistahs tarnished in that drama..My Prez is Black, now what!! Light, dark, red, yellow all the shades we come in, don't matter.
In the circle of the current video vixens..they have that issue, in the real world our daughters and our sons can listen to some of this hip hop but I pray they are not getting their image of beauty from them. I hope they are looking elsewhere ...my mama gave me mine.

Hello all-I am brandspankin new to this site, but I have been lurking for sometime now.

I just want to say that I completely understand everyone's point of veiw, but we as Black people are so segregated because we focus on minor things color. Like light skinned and Dark skinned, We are all BLACK. If we as a people wouldn't put so much emphasis on color more then like the rest of the country would follow suite. We as a people have to move forward. And I truly believe that if WE as women light skinned,brown skinned,latin, white, whatever would stand up and say NO to the record labels/rappers then there would have to be a change in the lyrics. Honestly I don't think it matters what female is in the video, she is still promoting the degrading lyrics and feeding in to the stereotypes that they give all Women. I want better for my daughter and I would hope u do too.

wow this really opened my eyes, i've noticed that most videos now have a light skin sister or a spanish chick in them, i thought i noticed it because i am a dark skin sister, but i guess not. i am really glad i saw this blog.

this is too deep of an issue. i say if a mofo aint checking for you cause of your skin color then fuck em. find someone else. this mindset will only change when we teach our youth that all shades are beautiful and you can choose whoever you want to date or be in a video. i personally dont pay the shit any attention. im a brown skinned sista and gets plenty of love from ballers. i'm not dark skinned but i aint high yellow either. i do me. as ive said before.....at the end of the day, there are alot of ballers that marry and date black chicks. i really dont think they are that obsessed with light/exotic chicks. there are some. but i will put my money on MOST being with black chicks.

Just wanted to add...The "ballers" referred to in this particular post are "ballers" I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole. I am NOT into rappers. And as far as money goes, the majority of their asses have that MC Hammer money--buying "big ass chains", a fleet of cars, every damn body from the hood on payroll. As we all know, true ballers generate wealth. They invest, and they make their money work for them, creating generational wealth, putting themselves and their families in a completely different social class (the true definition of "upgrade").
Also, as we all know, the media is very selective, and provides us only with the images that it wants us to see. Black women, regardless of skintone, are universally beautiful, period. Men of all races think so. When rich white men date Black women, that shit is not on the cover of magazines and all over the red carpet. I was googling the other day and found a looooooooooooong list of white men (including actors, authors, CEOs and VPs, foreign royalty, athletes, lawyers, politicians) that have all dated or married Black women.
Said all that to say, F these rappers and the audience they cater to.

I just posted a similar story on my blog. I don't go for that if you get a lighter girl it's more marketable, that would come for the girl that is lighter. These hip hop artists have forgotten that it is the black girls and women that supported them from the jump. The chicks that go to their shows and request their songs on the radio.

Black girls and women show all of this support and what does the artist do? He picks a Latina. That is not your core audience and if the label is telling you what kind of girl to get, more than likely they're gonna tell you how you should sound, rap, and write. Where is the artistic control? What happened to standing up for black women? Of course the video vixen can be degrading, but she can also be portrayed as a beautiful love interest. Beauty comes in all colors and I want every blogger out there to put some heat on these artists and their record companies and tell them no more. From Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Omarion WTF? What do they have to say? Let's put some fire under their butts.
