Falcons Being Investigated For The Use Of Artificial Crowd Noise

In the latest NFL “broken rule” scandal, the Atlanta Falcons are being investigated for the alleged use of artificial crowd noise. If the investigation finds that the allegations are true, the Falcons will likely be fined and could even possibly lose a pick in the upcoming draft.
Over the course of the past two seasons, the NFL has been looking into the possible use of artificial crowd noise inside of the Georgia Dome. The team is being accused of using devices that increase crowd noise when the opposing teams are in offensive huddles.

Extreme crowd noise can definitely have its effects, as anyone who has played on the road against the Seattle Seahawks or the Kansas City Chiefs will tell you. Loud arenas can very easily interfere with opposing team’s play calling, cause players to jump the line of scrimmage early, shake snap counts, and much more. Though it doesn’t seem to have been much help for the Falcons in the long run (with them only going 3-5 at home) any home-made crowd noise tactic is indeed prohibited. In fact many devices used to maximize noise in unnatural ways such as megaphones, bullhorns, and whistles, are not permitted inside of most NFL stadiums.

This tactic however isn’t new. Teams including the Colts and the Vikings have been accused of taking the same measures in the past.

As for the Falcons, a spokesperson has said that they were informed of the investigation during the regular season, and has stated that they’ve cooperated fully with the league and are currently awaiting the outcome.
