For Women Who Want The Ballerific Life!
Olympic diver for China, Wu Minxia, won her third consecutive gold medal and in doing so became the first woman in history to win three consecutive Olympic golds. She's worked hard for it too. She devoted herself completely to training and was cut off from the outside world. So much so, that she had no idea her grand parents had died over a year ago and that her mother was battling breast cancer for eight years.
"Wu called us after her grandmother died, I gritted my teeth and told her: ‘everything's fine, there aren't any problems','' Wu's father Wu Jueming told the paper. Wu's parents found such lies were "essential'' to ensure their daughter could keep focused on her training, the Shanghai Daily said. "We never talk about family matters with our daughter,'' the father said.
Wu's parents also haven't seen their daughter and have been using the Chinese equivalent of Twitter to keep up with her. Thankfully, her mother's breast cancer is now in remission.
This is kind of sad. No one should be kept in the dark about family issues for the sake of training. She can't even enjoy her gold medals now.
Comment by Baller Alert on August 2, 2012 at 12:08pm That is kinda sick...
How much money do they get when they become gold medalists? Do they get month;y checks, lump sums? Do they need to keep working/training? I know its o/t, but I was just wondering. And this is selfish of the parents at the highest level

Comment by OLD $PICE PINE NEEDLE on August 2, 2012 at 3:41pm You need to understand Chinese culture. They take the kids away from the families for the whole year and this is what they do. They put athletic supremacy above family & individual values. I have more respect for athletes that have a good life/family balance. When someone wins silver or bronze I applaud them for at least 'making it to the podium'.
Comment by Sissy on August 2, 2012 at 7:05pm I agree with Spice, that's their culture. However, keeping death away from her for a few months/weeks can be overlooked- a whole year may be a little extensive
Comment by BabyBallerCheeks on August 2, 2012 at 9:47pm I'm not sure how many of you have lived with someone who was terminally ill but my father had pancreatic cancer. It wore on me EVERYDAY. EVERYDAY he would throw up, tell me how he was afraid to die, call out my name in the middle of the night, scream in sheer pain and agony (people don't know how much of a b**** chemo really is -- my dad went from Chris Brown's complexion to Naomi Cambell. Plus, puss came out of his fingertips and he lost every last piece of hair -- eyelashes, eyebrows and all) ...etc. I took it so hard I contemplated suicide; I was young, scared, frazzled, confused and TIRED. I had to deal with a newborn, college coursework and a sick father.
From then on I always promised to never tell my family when I am sick. I don't want to bring others down because I am in bad health. I will NEVER do that to my child. If I am sick, I will simply say I am not feeling well and deal with it on my own. It is
