Law number 10 – Hobbies

I know you have a hobby. Everybody has a hobby and if you don’t have one then get one! But what does this have to do with love, falling in love and finding love etc? A hell of a lot!
I mean who finds someone that just sits in front of the TV all day attractive? Similarly, someone that spends their life glued to work looks like an extremely dull prospect. You need to have interests people! Whether it’s reading books, to going to the gym, or even sky-diving, in this modern day and age there is no reason why we shouldn’t all have some type of hobby (oh and ladies – shopping is not a hobby!) to enrich our lives and broaden our otherwise narrow horizons.
I for one have had many hobbies through the years and I can’t imagine what my life would be like without a one.
Most importantly, hobbies give one a chance to interact with other people and even meet the man/woman of your dreams! An old friend of mine (that had resigned herself to being lonely with no man) joined a running club and was training for the London Marathon a few years back; she ended up getting an admirer in one of the club members and they ended up together. It’s a lovely story, but if she hadn’t gotten off her ass and started some type of hobby (again rather than sitting in front of the TV every night), who knows if she would have met “the one”?
For those already in relationships: Hobbies and generally having other interests takes you away from the daily grind; it will also give you a chance to do things that you like to do on your own. Don’t feel as if you need to have the same hobbies as your significant other; people are different and it’s likely that your other half actually loves you for those differences.
I for one spent too long doing things (as in hobbies he liked – it wasn’t forced, but I thought it would make our relationship stronger – it didn’t) because I knew that he liked to do them. In the end, I left all my personal hobbies and passions behind. It wasn’t until we’d broken up that I realised what I had been doing. It was also one of the causes of some of the bitterness I had toward the break up.
I realised that there was no point in blaming him when I was the one refusing to “do me”. I learned from that experience, that no two people will be exactly the same in every way; neither will they have everything in common. It’s just not natural. We are all different and that is okay. We’ll all have different hobbies and when we get back to that special person in our lives, maybe we’ll have something cool to show them!
Here are a few no-brainer pointers from me if you are looking for love:
Ladies: go for hobbies that you’ll find men at too. The gym is a great place and you can join classes for lots of different activates, outdoor sports (tennis, golf courses etc), if you’re that kind of girl extreme sports (you can just watch even if you don’t wanna participate!), Sci-fi conventions, bowling alleys and of course for the more cultured, art galleries and libraries (there seem to be a lot of men in mine for some reason!).
For the boys: Ever thought of joining some type of dance class? There are bound to be a lot of ladies and chances are you will be in close quarters with them (good way to get to know someone!), the gym is another great place as above, poetry recitals, book conventions and also as above art galleries.
The two paragraphs above are not exhaustive so feel free to add or do what you like to do! It’s just a fun way to meet like-minded people and hopefully…the rest of the magic should hopefully happen on its own.

Comment by Siren on July 2, 2009 at 12:27pm - Hobbies are essential to happiness IMO...I am always trying something that I am interestedin. Cooking is one of my hobbies as you all know. Hobbies can also be turned into $$$ making opportunities. I taught myself to knit which has been very rewarding for me. I always try things that interest me once some I stick with some things aren't for me.

Oh here is for you ladies looking to meet men try American Sign language classes. I am taking them and you meet a lot of professionals there and they are not deaf they take to classes as a hobby for the most part I find. So far I meet one of the leads of a Broadway play. The head accounting manager for the Red Bulls yes that is the NY soccer team and Red Bull the drink and one of the VP's of Chase Bank. Yes I did get free red bull stuff and picked up a few numbers. Hobbies are important.

@ Siren - I love your hobby...and you know I'm coming to dinner at your house someday! I used to knit back in high-school, but when boys came on to the scene, I quickly forgot how to! lol!
@ Bass - Wow...that's a new one. Sign language classes? You better get those numbers....
@Boss - It's true, we ladies love too much and forget about our passions. But like Siren said, I hope that my hobby pays off someday....

I like photography, reading (& now writing tks to LL) & sports. Some hobbies you can do alone or as a couple, but more important, don't lose yourself in the relationship to please someone.
First things a guy will ask you is what do you do for fun or what is your hobby, he doesn't want you glued to him.
